The Eleven Mottoes of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama

These eleven guidelines are known as Zayu no Mei Juichi or the Eleven Mottoes.
Together with the Dojo-Kun (Dojo Oath), these guidelines form a profound philosophy
and become the foundation of Kyokushin Karate.

  1. Martial arts begin and end with courtesy. Therefore, maintain courtesy properly and sincerely at all times.
  2. Following the Way of Martial Arts is like climbing a cliff, always ascending without fatigue. It requires dedication and unwavering conviction in its practice.
  3. Strive hard to take initiative in everything and always be careful of actions born of hostility and selfishness.
  4. The role of money cannot be ignored, even for martial artists. Nevertheless, one must be cautious not to become attached to it.
  5. Martial arts are centered on attitude. Strive diligently to maintain the right attitude at all times.
  6. The Way of Martial Arts begins after 1,000 days of training and reaches mastery after 10,000 days of training.
  7. In Martial Arts, introspection yields wisdom. Constantly reflecting on one’s actions is an opportunity for progress.
  8. The nature and purpose of martial arts are universal. All selfishness must be eradicated through rigorous training.
  9. The Way of Martial Arts begins from a point and ends in a circle. Straight lines emerge from this principle.
  10. The true essence of martial arts can only be understood through experience. Realizing this, learn never to fear its demands.
  11. Always remember, in martial arts the rewards of conviction and sincerity are abundant.
